What Are The Marriage Requirements in Costa Rica?

Simplistic Requirements

Getting married in Costa Rica is very easy. The first thing that you need to have in order for you to be able to get married in Costa Rica is your passport from your country. Every foreigner here has a passport since it is required to enter the country. This is only used to verify your identity for your marriage certificate so that it can be registered in the Civil Registry. A Costa Rican citizen only needs their identity card. The process is quite simple and you will not have to worry about what you need or what to do. You only need a lawyer to marry you in order for the marriage to be legal and binding in the eyes of the law. You do not need a lot of paper work like it is in other countries and you do not need to undergo a health exam.

Documents

Your passport will provide all your identification information such as date of birth, real names, nationality and other important information that might be needed. Our lawyer will prepare your marriage certificate for your signature and present it to the Civil Registry.

On the Wedding Day

On the day of the wedding both you and your partner should be able to provide information on your ages, your home addresses which include the state, the city and even town if needed. You will also be required to provide information on your occupation and your marital status. Hire a Costa Rica Lawyer

In order for you to be able to get married in Costa Rica, you need to hire a Costa Rican lawyer to prepare the marriage certificate. You need to ensure that you hire a lawyer who is reputable so that you can be assured of excellent services. You will also need to have two witnesses in order for your marriage to be legal. The two witnesses can be family members or friends. If you do not have the witnesses, you do not need to worry. Most wedding planners will provide witnesses for you so that your wedding ceremony can go on flawlessly.

At the Wedding Ceremony

During the wedding ceremony, there is an affidavit that both you and your partner will have to sign which shows that you are free to get married. This is important in Costa Rica as they need to ensure that you are legally getting married. It is prepared by the lawyer who will preside over the ceremony. The lawyer has to perform the ceremony so that he can be able to draft the correct paperwork that is needed to make everything legal.

Previously Married?

In Costa Rica the civil registry has a record of all marriages and divorces done in Costa Rica. If your divorce is not registered then you can provide a copy of your divorce. This is just to show that you can be legally married without any restrictions. If you are a widow than you can to provide a copy of the death certificate.
